Old Growth

Beautiful design, beautiful images and one message we cant ignore. To think we are still destroying the small amount of beautiful old growth forests we have left is heart breaking.

Since the first colonial axe struck until now, 92% of Australian old growth has been destroyed. Of the 8% that remains, 4% is within national parks and conservation reserves.

Old-growth forests include a complex mix of new growth, solid mature stands and decaying old tress. These forests provide crucial habitat for our native plants, animals, birds and insects; they also protect life on earth by helping to stave of the intensifying effects of global warming.

The forests and oceans of the Earth are our main carbon sinks. As forests grow they draw in and store vast amounts of carbon, which is held within the trees, their root systems and the soil. The older the tree, the greater the amount of carbon stored. This alone should be reason enough to ensure the protection of our remaining ancient forests.

“Old Growth” is an inspiring book by Peter Cundall.
